According to Il Mattino, the regional councillor for Civil Protection of Campania, Fiorella Zabatta, has reported that the first trial train runs inside the tunnel of Line 2 of the Naples metro, on the Campi Flegrei-Pozzuoli section, are due to end. The information comes from the infrastructure manager Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), part of the FS Group, which informed the regional government.

The trials tested train operation under a range of possible safety conditions, including scenarios involving possible failures. According to the information released by the source, the data collected will be processed by the Sapienza University of Rome. The results will be used to assess the safety of reopening rail traffic in the tunnel on a single track as soon as possible.

Technical table meeting

Il Mattino also reports that a new meeting of the technical table was held at the offices of the Civil Protection of the Campania Region to review the situation with RFI. The section concerned runs between Pozzuoli and Campi Flegrei station on Line 2 of the Naples metro.

Among those taking part were the mayors of Pozzuoli, Luigi Manzoni, of Bacoli, Josi Della Ragione, and of Quarto, Antonio Sabino. Representatives of the Vesuvius Observatory of the INGV, the regional directors for Civil Protection and Transport, and technical staff from the Municipality of Naples and other bodies also attended.

Next steps

Zabatta described the simulations and the analysis of the available data as a fundamental step, preparatory to the assessments needed before the rail section can be safely reopened. The source does not give a date for the reopening.

A separate report in the same newspaper notes that a decree on the area had not yet been published, with the Bacoli mayor complaining that local communities were treated as second-class territory. The details of that decree are not included in the material available here.
