According to Gobierno de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires – Noticias, retirees living in the City of Buenos Aires can now travel free on the Subte simply by presenting their DNI, the national identity document, at enabled turnstiles. The system started operating on the day the source was published, and the City says its goal is to simplify access to the benefit and reduce paperwork.

Who is eligible

The benefit is aimed at retirees who live in the City and have an income of up to 2.5 times the minimum pension amount. It covers retirees, pensioners, and retired members of the Armed Forces and security forces.

How to apply

Both people applying for the first time and those who already hold the benefit through other means, such as the SUBE card or the Buepp application, can use the new method. The application is made through an online form on the City government website. It can also be completed in person, without a prior appointment, at the senior citizen service offices of the respective community centers.

The application requires basic personal details, including name, address, CUIL and telephone number, along with a photo of the DNI and the most recent pay slip. Applicants must also declare that they receive no other income of any kind beyond the pension payments they report.

Using the DNI on the Subte

Once the application is approved, beneficiaries receive a notification by WhatsApp. From that point, they can present their DNI at the validators of the Multipago turnstiles enabled at Subte stations to access the free service. According to the source, this removes the need for a specific card or application.

Context

The City presents the measure as part of its effort to modernize public transport services and make existing benefits for older adults easier to use. The head of government, Jorge Macri, said that improving mobility for residents is a priority and mentioned the largest Subte renovation investment in 20 years, as well as ongoing construction of the new Line F.
