Passengers using the Glasgow Subway are being asked to plan ahead, after the network was announced to be closed for two days this month for what has been described as "critical" engineering work, according to Glasgow Live.
When the closures take place
Both lines will be closed on Sunday, November 15 and Sunday, November 22. During these closures, engineers and operational teams will carry out testing and validation of the updated systems across the network.
What the work involves
The testing covers the new signalling and communications systems that support the modernised subway. According to Glasgow Live, SPT says the work is needed to confirm that these systems operate safely, reliably and as intended. New platform screen doors, which have already been installed at a number of stations, will also continue to be fitted while the inner and outer lines are closed.
The closures are part of SPT's ongoing programme to modernise the subway. Glasgow Live reports that much of the upgraded infrastructure has been installed behind the scenes over the past few years, and that the programme is now nearing its final stage.
Road disruption
Planned closures of the M8 motorway will also be in place until 1pm on both Sundays. According to Glasgow Live, SPT warns that this may lead to increased traffic and delays, so people travelling by road on those mornings should allow extra time.
Advice for passengers
Locals are being urged to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys in case of disruption. Alternative travel arrangements for the closure days are not detailed in the information released by the source.
Richard Robinson, Director of Transport Operations at SPT, said the work would allow the team to "replicate a wide range of operational scenarios" before the modernisation programme is complete.
SPT has said that passenger safety and the smooth running of the subway remain its top priorities, and that the closures will help ensure both during this stage of testing.
