The Empresa Metropolitana de Transporte (EMT) says it is carrying out corrective maintenance on escalators and elevators at several stations of the Metro de Santo Domingo, according to Diario Libre. The work followed a report by Diario Libre, which found that some of this equipment was out of service during a tour of the network.

What the inspection found

On Thursday, Diario Libre visited six stations. According to the newspaper, at least one escalator or elevator was out of service in five of them. The stations were Francisco Gregorio Billini, Ulises Francisco Espaillat, Pedro Mir, Freddy Beras Goico and Juan Pablo Duarte. Juan Pablo Duarte is the connection point between Line 1 and Line 2. Only Juan Ulises García Saleta had both its escalators and elevators working correctly.

These devices help passengers move within stations, so their outages make travel harder, especially for people with reduced mobility, the newspaper noted.

Repairs announced by the EMT

On Friday, the EMT said that it is performing preventive and corrective work on the escalators at Mamá Tingó and Freddy Beras Goico stations. According to the statement published on the Metro's social media accounts, the aim is to offer a safer and more reliable service.

The EMT also said it monitors user concerns and media reports to identify incidents and follow up on the interventions needed. In the words of the statement, "the Metro reaffirms its commitment to listen, attend to and respond with solutions that improve the experience of its users."

What passengers should know

The available information does not give a completion date for the repairs, and it does not specify how many units remain out of service. Passengers who rely on escalators or elevators may want to check the condition of equipment at their station before travelling, particularly at the stations named in the report.
